For Parents & Community Members
SELO Kit’N Grow
Our SocioEmotional Learning Opportunity (SELO) program involves our facilitators working alongside caregivers and their children (prenatal to school age). We meet virtually or in person for several months.
Our facilitators engage families with activities centered around social emotional learning, self-care, and regulation.
Children and caregivers receive toolkits and guidance on using these tools and growing their regulation muscles, all while reflecting on ancestral healing practices. Each session builds on the previous one, and is co-designed to ensure that families gain skills to expand their socio-emotional vocabulary, apply a wellcare and (wellness and self-care) routine, and use practices centered and around healing.
SELO Kit’N Grow
This program is designed for:
Parent(s) & guardian(s) who are currently expecting or have babies and little ones (birth to 5 years old).
What to expect:
For 3-6 months, you will have a coach/group facilitator who will support you with information about your socio-emotional health, wellness and ways in which to engage and relate to your young children. We will weave in elements of ancestral and generational wellness, mindfulness, the playful aspect of nature indoor and outdoor in a holistic way. Our program is also designed to model the natural lifecycle of a plant, from planting seed through caring for its growth. That growth will reflect your journey in the program.
When and Where we meet:
1x/month we will meet 1:1 or in group for 1 hour. We will facilitate you receiving information about health and wellness, socio-emotional learning, infant mental health, equitable and safe access to outdoor and green spaces, environmental justice and herbal medicine and mindfulness. You will receive a tool to add to your growing toolkit at the end of each visit. At the completion of the program you will receive a stipend. We meet in person or virtually over Zoom, during weekdays or weekends. Sessions will be based on your availability. We may also be able to offer you support for your own childcare needs while in session. In the spring, we will meet indoor/outdoor in local green spaces and have more community events.
Cost:
With support from Best Start for Kids, King County, the program is free to King County residents. To celebrate your commitment for investing in your own health and wellness you receive a toolkit with resources upon which to build during our time together and a small stipend.
Outcome:
As parents and community guardians who wish to be supported with their emotional health, we are here to lift you up. As a result of our program, we wish you gain community, feel more connected to healing green spaces in King County, feel a sense of safety in the outdoors with community, have more activities for you and your children, and have access to several parenting resources in the community.
The Power of Culture in Nature for our Children
Creativity & Imagination
Bring the great outdoors in, and watch your little ones' creativity blossom! With a little imagination, kiddos can craft a whole nature world right inside your home with artsy projects, using natural goodies or by role-playing outdoor scenarios. The result? A garden of imaginative thinking and wild creativity!
Curiosity & Scientific Thinking
Nature's playground awaits! Nature kindles the flames of our inner scientists and implores us to seek deeper truths in the ecological tapestry and the lore of local cultures. We bow to you, Mother Nature, as the ultimate mentor!
Cultural & Environmental Connection
Our youth can feel a deep-rooted connection with their heritage and develop mental superpowers, all by hanging out with our green friends and elders. Whether it's hiking, bird-watching or just playing in the dirt, it's a whole world of adventure out there!
